Neer for iPhone 4

Neer was just approved by Apple for release in the iPhone App Store. Just search “Neer”. We are starting in a beta period with just the new iPhone 4′s right now to make sure everything is working properly.

If you have an iPhone 4, please download it and let us know what you think.

Android widget

With the Neer widget, you will be able to get at a glance location detail of the people in your Inner Circle. Use the contact button to call or text. Even works well for people who don’t use Neer as a way fast way to contact the people you call most.

If you are not familiar with Android widgets, they are small programs that live on your homescreen. To add the Neer widget: long-press on the homescreen, select widgets and choose Neer.

Now with Automatic SMS

Now you can use Neer even if the person you want to share with doesn’t have Neer.

With the Automatic SMS feature, you can have your phone automatically text anyone you want when you change locations. For example, you can set Neer to text your spouse when you leave work between 5pm – 7pm.

To set an Automatic SMS rule, just click twice on any of the people in your groups.

Here are the only caveats… Neer location updates work best if you have both GPS and Wifi on. Also, we scale back the location updates if your battery is low (we don’t want Neer running you out of juice). So the timeliness of the text is dependent upon these factors.

In our testing, we get the texts just as we drive away from or enter a place under normal use, so we are confident everything is working well. But if you have any trouble, we are here to help!

Tips & tricks – contact linking

.

Neer links you up with other Neer users once you both have one another in a Neer group. The linking happens automatically so long each person has the correct phone OR email address of the other person in their Android contacts. If someone isn’t showing up… just update your Android contacts, go to ‘Edit this group’ in Neer and hit ‘Done.’

Tips & tricks – battery optimization

We are working hard to ensure you get a full day of battery even with Neer running in the background.  We get this performance on our phones (an EVO, Incredible, Droid X, Droid, Aria, Nexus, Hero).  Here are tips to help you out.

Help Neer get location fixes faster

  • Turn on GPS
    home > menu > settings > wireless & networks
  • Turn on ‘Use wireless networks’ for location
    home > menu > settings > location
  • Turn on Wifi
    home > menu > settings > wireless & networks
even if you don’t connect to a data network, wifi will speed up location fixes and make them more accurate
  • Even though it may seem counter-intuitive, keeping GPS and Wifi on should improve battery life because Neer will spend dramatically less time finding your location. Android is able to manage these radios fairly well when they are idle.

A general caveat, however, is that location is tricky. Promptness and accuracy are a trade off for battery use.

Often times one person’s particular circumstances will cause more battery use than another. For instance, if you sit in the middle of a building at work for long periods without Wifi on, it will be very difficult to determine a location that is ‘good enough’ for Neer to work well.

We are working on this though, and pledge to continue making improvements to battery performance.

If you need to save battery, just go into Neer and turn automatic location OFF.  We put it right on the front page so you can’t miss it.
